Rich is currently studying towards his PhD at Brunel University, under supervisors Peter Wiegold and Colin Riley, where he specialises in constructing compositional methodologies for improvising musicians.

He is interested in combining through-composition with elements of improvisation, to varying degrees, working with different ensembles. Rich is particularly enthusiastic about producing works which accommodate the improvisatory identities of musicians from non-congruent musical backgrounds.
